Possible effect of wine on bone mineral density
The current review intended to assess clinical and animal studies investigating the influence of wine consumption on bone mineral density (BMD). Previous studies have shown potential beneficial effects of phenolic compounds found in wine on bone metabolism.
This review suggested a possible association between light to moderate wine consumption and favourable effects on bone mineral density, particularly in the spine and femoral neck. The authors cautioned, however, that these findings should be interpreted with caution since there is a scarcity of studies that specifically evaluated the isolated effect of wine on BMD, most evidence is based on epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials still need to assess this association.
