The Mediterranean diet: an emerging medical prescription?
This review describes the challenges of the Mediterranean dietary pattern. Approximately half a century ago, the Mediterranean lifestyle progressively gained recognition as one of the healthiest patterns of living and eating.
While its health benefits are universally recognized today by medical professionals, the present Med Diet is challenged by major difficulties in implementing this protective dietary pattern in other geographical and cultural areas. It also appears difficult to keep the Med Diet alive in traditional Mediterranean territories, as it is also tainted by the unhealthy eating habits brought by globalization (worldwide acculturation).
