New Dietary guidelines 2015-2020 in the US

The updated 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that encourage Americans to adopt a series of science-based recommendations to improve how they eat to reduce obesity and prevent chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease were released in January 2016.

The newly released 8th edition of the Dietary Guidelines recognizes the importance of focusing not on individual nutrients or foods in isolation, but on the variety of what people eat and drink—healthy eating patterns as a whole—to bring about lasting improvements in individuals’ and population’s health.

With regards to alcoholic beverages, the guidelines recommend: If alcohol is consumed, it should be consumed in moderation – up to one drink (*) per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men – and only by adults of legal drinking age.

(*) one alcoholic drink is described as containing 14 g of pure alcohol.
